Notes for team captains

What every captain needs to know for the 2026/27 season. The leagues page has the full rules.

Before the match

  • Only players on your team's panel can play.
  • Nobody can play below their grade unless Council has given permission. A team that fields an ineligible player forfeits the match, so check every player before each match.
  • A mixed team plays 3 or 4 men and 3 or 4 ladies. A men's or ladies' team must play all 4 players.
  • Once both teams agree a date, it can only be cancelled if both teams agree. A rearranged date can't be changed again, and every postponement needs the county secretary's permission.
  • All fixtures scheduled before Christmas must be played by Tuesday 22 December 2026.

On the night

  • Start at the agreed time.
  • Play matches out of order only if both teams agreed in advance.
  • Higher-graded players play ahead of lower-graded players in every doubles and mixed match.
  • Once the team sheets have been filled in and swapped, they can't be changed.

The scoresheet

Fill in the scoresheet in black or blue pen. Your club secretary has everything you need for it:

  • both club names, and which team it is if a club has two teams in the grade
  • the grade and section
  • the play-by date, and the date and time of the match
  • the names of the players who actually played, with each player's grade and Badminton Ireland number
  • both captains' signatures, each with a phone number in case there's a query

The winning captain sends it in, or the home captain if the match is a draw. Take a clear photo and send it on WhatsApp to 086 608 4798 within 48 hours, with your name and the competition, such as "Grade H men group 1".

Points are only given for a scoresheet that's legible, filled in correctly and on time. The only exception is a match the county secretary has given permission to play later.

Walkovers

A team's first walkover isn't fined. For the second and each one after that, the team must pay €100 before it plays another match. If your team is struggling to fulfil a fixture, tell the other captain as early as you can.
